Short Story

Poverty and inequality continue to affect millions across
South Africa. High unemployment, particularly among young
people, combined with rising food costs and overcrowded living
conditions, has left many families struggling to meet their basic
needs.

Nearly 2 in 5 South Africans are living below the poverty line. Children and young
people are particularly affected, with almost half of all poor individuals under the
age of 18, and poverty remaining the highest among younger age group.
Unemployment remains a major challenge, with an overall unemployment rate of
around 32%, and youth unemployment exceeding 45%.

Economic pressures including limited job opportunities, rising living costs, and
unequal access to basic services leaves many households struggling to cover
essential needs like food, healthcare, housing and education.

Campaign Story

During the blessed month of Ramadhaan, our hearts naturally turn toward global suffering. We see the suffering in far-off lands and respond with generosity – while this is a great part of our faith and humanity, we often overlook a quiet crisis unfolding right in our own backyard.

In our own communities, there are families who haven’t seen clean water, there are elders in our community who must choose between medicine and a meal, there are children who will wake up without the joy every child deserves but with the burden of poverty.

“He is not a believer who fills his stomach while his neighbor goes hungry.” – Prophet Muhammad (Salutations and peace be upon him), Bukhari

This Ramadhaan I ask you to open your hearts once again and help me, alongside Islamic Relief, be the ease in someone’s hardship and donate towards the rainbow nation we love- South Africa.
